Aluminum flanges are critical connecting components used extensively across modern manufacturing sectors. Their role is deceptively simple-joining pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment into a sealed, integrated system-yet their performance requirements demand exceptional precision. Custom CNC machining has emerged as the dominant fabrication method for these components, offering the tight tolerances, repeatability, and design flexibility that off-the-shelf solutions cannot provide.

Classifications by Structure and Function

Custom aluminum flanges can be categorized along several axes, with structural design being the most fundamental. Weld-neck flanges feature a long tapered hub that is butt-welded to the pipe, providing excellent stress distribution and making them ideal for high-pressure orhigh-temperature applications. Slip-on flanges, by contrast, slide over the pipe end and arefillet-welded both inside and outside, offering cost-effective installation where internal flow conditions are less demanding.


Threaded flanges are machined with internal threads that match the external threads of the pipe, enabling a weld-free assembly. This classification is particularly valuable in systems where welding is impractical or hazardous, such as in certain chemical processing lines. 


Lap-joint flanges are used in conjunction with stub-end fittings and are designed for systems requiring frequent dismantling for inspection or cleaning. The flange itself does not contact the process fluid directly, allowing it to be made from a less expensive material while the stub-end handles corrosion resistance.


Machined Flange Structural Features & Description
Slip-On Flange‌ Slides directly over the pipe and is fillet-welded both inside and outside. It offers easy alignment and is cost-effective, though it is generally not recommended for high-stress or high-pressure environments.
Threaded Flange‌ Machined with internal threads that match the external threads of the pipe, requiring no welding. Best suited for low-pressure systems where welding is hazardous; not recommended for systems with severe temperature cycling.
Blind Flange‌ A solid machined disc used to positively close off a pipe end, valve, or pressure vessel nozzle. It must withstand significant bending stress and internal pressure.
Orifice Flange‌ Specifically machined with pairs of pressure tappings on the flange neck for metering fluid flow. They are used in conjunction with orifice plates to measure the differential pressure of liquids or gases.
Custom/ Specialty Flange‌ Machined entirely from aluminum plate or billet according to non-standard customer drawings. This includes multi-port manifolds, intricate sensor mounting flanges, or vacuum-specific knife-edge flanges for semiconductor tools.


Beyond these standard types, the world of custom machining allows for completelynon-standard and application-specific flanges. These include multi-port flanges for complex manifold assemblies, instrument flanges with integrated sensor mounting points, and specialty flanges with built-in alignment features or custom bolt-hole patterns. The rise of 3-axis and 4-axis CNC machining centers has made such geometries increasingly accessible, with large-format workbenches (up to 6500 mm by 4200 mm) capable of producing oversized flanges for heavy industrial use.
